Please note that this message will contain a full copy of the comment thread, including the initial issue submission, for this request, not just the latest update. Category: gtk-ui Group: None >Status: Closed Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Silpheed2K (silpheed2k) Assigned to: Sean Egan (seanegan) Summary: 2.0b1 Please remove the new away buttons at the bottom Initial Comment: I dont know who made that decision but the new away buttons on the bottom arent making things any easier than the previous gaim... the context menues were easy and compact while being very quick. the new away buttons.. I'm scrolling and accidentally scroll over it and it completely takes my name offline and plus having an entire button for each of my account is just clunky in the buddy list UI. you all had the right design with the first gaim but this one is just not well thought out to me.. the first one had it just right and was a winner. I really like the old gui for the buddy list better... just the buddy list.. had my essential options nicely at the bottom.. the rest is good and i'm adjusting... great work.. keep it up and i hope you all take this suggestion ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Luke Schierer (lschiere) Date: 2007-04-09 21:14 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=28833 Originator: NO As we are closing this tracker, please submit any feature request that is still valid to http://developer.pidgin.im. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Murple (murpz) Date: 2005-12-27 14:07 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1413788 Agreed... extremely obnoxious. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Sven Peter (svpe) Date: 2005-12-25 10:38 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1228598 I like the new per-account status selectors very much. I only think there are a bit too big. It would be great if you could make them a bit smaller. But please do not remove them again. I think the best soloution is to add an option whether these buttons are displayed or not. The user who do not like them could just disable them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Daniel Beardsmore (uilleann) Date: 2005-12-20 10:30 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=473078 As a note -- having a visible display of status is a definite good thing! Been waiting for this for a looooong time; I like the Accounts Status plugin but it's buggy and seemingly abandoned but now gaim can show status all by itself =) yay! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Christopher Dundon (deusinnomen) Date: 2005-12-20 10:02 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=1409305 As to not simply make this a "me too" response, this could be a good opportunity for a configurable setting regarding the Away Message selection. Simply put, designate how it is displayed presently in 2.0b1 as "Advanced", create a "Simple" setting that emulates the 1.5.0 version with a basic dropdown of Saved away messages, and "None" for the above suggestion regarding never using away messages. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Daniel Beardsmore (uilleann) Date: 2005-12-20 09:20 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=473078 I tend to click "Custom" when I mean "Saved". Saved items should be a submenu, of: * All saved items (click to use) * <separator> * Edit Saved Items ... for rapid access to ones you created. Certainly, the saved status window should vanish if you click Use, as it's a real nuisance. But having that new control in the buddy list is (to do a silvestrij) a *good thing* as it saves piddling about with the menu bar. I just miss having the options in the tray icon as I can't go away or unaway from the tray any more :( Custom per-protocol status is a *good thing* too as I can use a custom message for out to lunch ("away" in most protocols) but also use the official Out To Lunch status for MSN. (PS MSN has much more advanced status now apparently, but gaim doesn't understand it. Though last time I saw MSN Messenger -- month ago or two -- it showed no signs of this.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Richard Laager (rlaager) Date: 2005-12-20 03:10 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=156487 Per-account status selectors are going to be dealt with some other way. For now, you can drag the bar down to collapse them. We're going to make the global status selector not waste as much space. I really think people can deal with a few pixels being used, even if they don't ever use the status selector, especially given that we used to have buttons there. You're scrolling with the scroll wheel, right? I wonder if we could disable that for the status selector? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Nick Daly (myownlittlworld) Date: 2005-12-19 22:52 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=804360 Actually, I'm kinda for the away buttons at the bottom, though I admit they're a bit klunky/_BIG_ (an option to use vertically shorter buttons would be nice), so I have several suggestions to resolve the issue... 1. Make the away stuff at the bottom collapsable (a collapsable menu)... Click a wee little button at the bottom, and it disappears into the wee little button until you click the button again and it comes back. That way, it doesn't take up screen space of users who don't want to see it. 2. Make using the old functionality an option in the prefereneces? I don't know if that's really reasonable, maybe someone could get back to me on that, but I get the feeling that the two away message architectures are a bit different between gaim 1.X and 2... 3. Shrink the size of the text boxes that contain the actual away/available message to the actual vertical height of the text. This prevents a mostly empty text box from taking up screen space that other parts of the GUI need much more. My non expert opinion is that the text box box should expand to a max of say, 30 px or 3 lines (whichever is larger), and after that it's a scrollable box. It should also be resizable down to about 1 line of text or 10px (whichever is shorter) even if it's a 10 paragraph away message - at that point, it doesn't matter if you can't fit a scrollbar at the side of the text box, it's obvious that the user doesn't want to read anything more than the first line or so of what's in the box. Let them expand the box if they want a scrollbar... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Jamie Macey (vaevictis666) Date: 2005-12-19 22:17 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=466031 I'll second this one. Even if you don't want to make a Preferences option out of this, give it a drag handle and allow us to drag it down into nothingness like you can do for the individual account statuses. I never change my status, I'm either offline, "Available", or idle, and I let gaim just guess at that, it does a mighty fine job of it already. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=350235&aid=1385773&group_id=235 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys.
