Category: None Group: None >Status: Closed Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Filip Miletic (filmil) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: More logical New IM option Initial Comment: Friends, Roman, Countrymen and GAIM developers. Lend me your ears. :) Could you consider making a little bit more logical New IM option (the one you get by pressing Ctrl-I). It would be nice that the new dialog does an incremental search over all available friends (i.e. type-ahead) and that it autoselects the protocol used if the type-ahead matches somewhere. Present implementation does no type-ahead and moreover lets you send a message to a screen name which might not be associated with the selected protocol. This happens on regular basis for me and I might not be an exception. This would also make IM'ing offline buddies easier. Right now I have to click on Show Offline buddies, then select a buddy, then IM him/her and then toggle Show offline buddies again. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Ryan Hayle (hackel) Date: 2003-09-14 11:51 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=94667 The ctrl-f feature is great, but not well-documented. :) I offer, as an alternative, this suggestion from ICQ. When you open the right-click context menu on a group, there should be a "Send IM to" submenu which displays all of the buddies (including offline). I can understand why this wasn't important for using AIM, but now that ICQ, Jabber, and Yahoo support offline messages, it would be a really nice feature. The biggest reason I hate showing offline buddies simply to message someone is that it usually takes 30 seconds to process the entire list to display it! I don't need to see offline buddies' icons or anything like that, so really it's a waste. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Jesse Farmer (farmerje) Date: 2003-09-08 13:13 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=836112 If you want to IM someone on your buddy list why not just use ctrl+f to search through the buddy list? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Filip Miletic (filmil) Date: 2003-09-08 09:02 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=48189 IMHO it is not so. Read on to find out why. :) The new functionality could incorporate the old one, i.e. you would still be able to type whatever you want into the input box. Maybe the right way to do it would be to have a mechanism alike the name-completion of the shells or emacs. So you could type first few letters and press TAB (or another key of choice) to let GAIM search through friends list and select a matching friend (and corresponding protocol!). This makes IM'ing your buddies easy even if they are offline, but does not prevent you to IM someone unknown to GAIM. For me this kind of using IM is rare. Actually I cannot recall _ever_ IM'ing someone not on the buddy list. YMMV. As things are now, I have to know by heart all the screen-names and aliases, since I do not keep the GAIM window open on desktop as screen space is scarce, and even if by some twist of event I did, I would still not be able to IM a friend who just happens not to be online. To recapitulate: your objection that it would disallow messaging someone not on your list does not hold. The only remaining reason against it, with respect to your message, is your personal preference. And of course thanks for your time to read through the proposition. f ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Luke Schierer (lschiere) Date: 2003-09-08 08:08 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=28833 but that would not let you im someone not on your buddy list with out changing the protocol back. i don't like the idea. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=350235&aid=802186&group_id=235 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML.
