Initial Comment:
wrote a quick and dirty Gaim iTunes current track plugin.

it displays the current track in Available msg for AIM

I had to modify the liboscar.dll plugin to allow this
functionality

obviously it only works for Gaim win32 with itunes

Download it here

Great plugin! You are right though, WMP support is lacking. I got it to
work after installing the renamed "Windows Live Messenger Music Plugin"
that came with the latest version of Windows Live Messanger. Thanks!

antagonizt, thank you for a cool little plugin. One request that I would
like to make, if you get the chance, is to allow for the ability to
customize the message output, using placeholders. So, you could configure
to display the title, album, and artist, using %t, %al, %ar, for example.

Format:
%u is listening to %ar - %t (%al)

Outputs:
<username> is listening to Artist - Track (Album Name)

Thanks again =)

It is probably possible to add Rhapsody... I'll look into
it. I'm thinking of adding a "Custom" option where the user
finds the Window class name of their favorite media player
and specifies the format of the title string. For example
Winamp would be:

Window Class: "Winamp v1.x"
String Format: "%num%. %artist% - %album% - %title% - Winamp"

Rhapsody is basically a fancy version of Real player so
hopefully it wouldn't be to hard.

Apart from the foobar2000 thing mentioned earlier, there is
one other annoyance (which has been mentioned earlier),
which is when you type /track. Is it possible for you to
make it simply type out the Song, and not link to Amazon? Or
perhaps have the option of choosing whether or not to do
link to Amazon.

Fixed all errors I had. Thanks for the fix. Only slight
annoyance I have is the lack of foobar2000 0.9.1 song
detection. However, an easy workaround was using the winamp
API plugin for foobar.

Thanks again for the fix.

I seem to be having issues too.

Firstly, what I'm running:
Foobar2000
Gaim 2.0b3 w/ the plugin running

The plugin works fine, till someone talks to me, then Gaim
decides to crash.

The crashes do not occur when I do not have the plugin
installed.

well, .8 seems to work pretty well. I only have one
question. Is it suppossed to put the track info in the user
info in the form of a link? Instead of simpley say artist -
title, it makes arisit-title a link to a amazon.com search
for the album. i'd rather have it j/ display it.

other than that, thx. *claps*

I took a look at the /track code, and I think you might be
able to get around the slash command pref trouble by
registering /track as a command Gaim recognizes via
gaim_cmd_register(). (see
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/api/cmds_8h.html#da94c2b2d0eaf1f530081d91ddadcfd3

rem25,

If you can consistantly reproduce this please file a bug
with as much detail as possible (OS, Gaim version, plugin
version, number and types of accounts logged in, options
selected, media player used, specific song title if
applicable, and the steps to reproduce)

Here is a direct link to file a bug report:
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=151509&atid=781222

jaysscholar,

please file a bug about the userinfo (see above comment to
rem25). If all you are typing is /track make sure you have
"Send unknown "slash" commands as messages" checked in your
Gaim preferences.

duerra,

please see above about configuring Gaim for /track if it
applies.

All,
I appreciate everyone who is using/testing and reporting
problems with this plugin. Unfortunetly it's just me working
on it and I have no QA team so bugs do slip by (often).
There were some major changes to the code base for these
last two releases and I'm sure there are some bugs to be
worked out.

/track doesn't seem to work in IRC chat rooms, but at
least appears to work for AOL chats.

I've not had any other issues, but I don't use it for any
other reason, so....

Would be nice to not always have to display a link to
Amazon when using "/track", but it's really a minor
request, and I definitely appreciate the feature and time
taken to implement it.

version on XP and it's great. The only problem is whenever
I have the "Query Amazon.com...." box checked, my CPU shoots
up to 99% for gaim. Dunno if it's just my machine or if
anyone else has experienced this.

Right, that's a feature of this release. Type "/track" and
it is replaced with "artist - title". Make sure to read the

For example, I could type "/music" to a buddy, and it
would be processed to put insert the artist/track/whatever
as a replacement for my text and send that instead.

I see so many of these plugins that will place your song
as your status message, but it's not something I
personally want to broadcast to the world, but something
I'd like to be able to inform friends of quickly on
command.

I don't know if any of you are familiar with Trillian, but
essentially I'm looking for something that works similar
to the Winamp plugin for Trillian.

The only place the font could be edited would be in the user
profile (AIM only). This may be possible when I add support
for customizing the track format.

It seems lots of folks don't like the "Paused"/"Quiet"
messages. I plan on making this customizable in a future
release.

Now everyone go test this with gaim beta3! ;)

Is there a way to not show 'Paused' when the player is

Howdy -

I was enjoying this plug-in thoroughly (with GAIM 2 beta 2
on Windows XP) until the first time that WinAmp played a
track with an accent in the song title. That caused GAIM
to crash with an error about needing to provide an Away
message. After that launching GAIM would make that or
other (similar) errors pop up until I quit WinAmp.

Maybe you could sanitize the input text more before
passing it on to GAIM so that us furriners could use your
plug-in?

Thanks!

What is the possibility of making this plugin work with an
alias, rather than setting it in the profile?

For example, typing /music would cause the plugin to send
a message displaying the artist/album/track/whatever per
formating specified in the configuration.

Most of the time I want somebody to quickly know what I am

A new version of gaim has been released. It is likely that your

I've updated the plugin to use the Gaim 2.0.0 status API.

you can download cvs builds of Gaim 2.0.0cvs here:
http://geddeth.dk/downloads/gaim/

the updated plugin is available here:

This is of course buggy as Gaim 2.0.0 is not even in beta
yet so use it at your own risk... the code is in cvs on the

Is there any way to use this in an Away Message?

I haven't had time to make any real improvements yet. The
code is in CVS on sourceforge
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/currenttrack) and I
encourage anyone that is interested to check out the code
and submit a patch.

It doesn't get the album art from amazon. The code you saw
is a feature I would like to add at some point that would
find album art for tracks that don't have it.

I have a question. I've been running this using iTunes and
it's great. The only thing I'm noticing is that only some
of the albums are popping up and others are not. Would you
have any idea as to why this would be? I've checked some
that aren't popping up and there is album art for it in the
itunes music store so I'm not sure why it's acting like it
is. Thanks!

you got it to display into the userinfo which is nice. but
it still brings you back from away when the song changes.
maybe you could make it stop displaying in the availabele
when you are away.

So how's your Linux programming? I thought with the
gaim-amaroK plugin now floating around I'd have a go at
"porting" this. dbus makes it easy to grab the tune out of
amaroK and the Gaim-Rhythmbox project
(http://gaim-rhythmbox.sourceforge.net/) has been around for
ages, and as I check the page right now, it appears it was
updated semi-recently with available messages.

I've come up against some of the semantics of Gaim plugin
developing however. I was going to do something very similar
to what you've done with your Windows version. I figure I'll
just fork and have the child continually read/update/sleep
while the parent waits on the child. What I don't understand
is how to properly unload the plugin and kill the child
process at that time. If you've got any ideas I'd like to
hear them.

I'll look into figuring out how to prevent it from bringing
you back from away...

In the mean time another update!

- more efficient album art icon cache code
- better handling of itunes radio stations
- new option to append the current track to your user info

get it here: http://software.johnroark.net

I think this plugin interferes with away messages. Whenever
I click away, it works fine at first, but after a few
seconds, the plugin updates the available message, and my
loopback contact shows that I am no longer away. I think the
solution is to not update if there is an away message present.

Don't use AIM so I'm not using this plugin but I've been
following it with interest.

Updating the buddy icon is a pretty clever idea, original
too. Not seen that in other plugins.

Just wanted to say, nice one :)

Another update, the plugin can now set your buddy icon based
on the album art from iTunes.

True, msn doesn't support an available message.
Actually, to tell the story, I once used "dMSN", which is an
msn client, and allows you to add the currently playing song
at the end of your nickname.
In the software options, where you enter your nickname, you
add a code at the end of it, like %winampcurrentsong ,
%winampsongposition, and so on.. I'm trying it right now and
it seems to be working well.
This is the thing I've been seeking for Gaim. And as I've
seen it in another software, I thought it would be something
that could be done for Gaim, though I don't know anything
about code and stuff..

PS : if you will excuse my bad english..

If you have the text file open the plugin will be unable to
read from it. Otherwise I'm not sure what could be happening.

Sorry to bombard you with comments, but I've got a bug that
I can't figure out and I can only reproduce it some times.
It does only happen when attempting to read from a file.
Basically, it just doesn't update. This screenshot kind of
shows it: http://img364.imageshack.us/img364/7434/npbug1vz.jpg

It shows a track that was playing and the textfile where the
currently playing information is written to.

MSN7 does support a "now playing" sort of thing, however I
doubt it would be possible/worth implementing in Gaim.

Thanks for the new version, antagonizt. I took a quick look
around MSDN for information regarding how you could pull
data from WMP, but I couldn't find anything. I'll keep
looking and report back, along with any other bugs I find.

nyhil,
I don't think such a plugin is possible for MSN, Yahoo, or
ICQ. I don't think any of those protocols support an
"Available Message" like AIM.

evandb,
I updated the files on my site. Should fix the problem you
were seeing.

Bug: Firing up Gaim with the plugin loaded and set to read
from file which is empty (I assume the same thing occurs if
it creates an empty file) seems to max CPU use.

Hi.
I've been looking for a similar plugin for msn.
Do you know if it already exists (haven't found it) and/or
if it is something that can be done?

I updated the plugin so that you can use it with Winamp or
any other player that will let you save the track name to a
file.

Whoops, wasn't logged in for last comment. Anyway, there's a
slight bug with a plugin with long artists/song titles. It
causes the "Paused" message to be displayed. Looking through
the code, it's possible that this is an iTunes limitation,
but I can't be sure.

Thanks for this.

I did see what you did with the oscar code and thought it
was clever, and you're probably right about the patch not
being accepted. I know that the status system is being
rewritten entirely, I'm just getting a little antsy waiting
for it. ;)

It is possible. I'm planning on adding a UI that will let
the user select how they want to get the track info. Right
now I think it will be directly from iTunes, directly from
Winamp, or from a file. I'll update whenever I get a chance
to update the code/plugin.

I don't think the gaim devs would be interested in the
hack... I actually chatted with them a while back and was
told that the change I wanted was coming. I just abused the
set_chat_topic function pointer so that it could acces the
internal oscar code to set the available msg. I'll make a
diff anyway...

Sorry for spreading my comments across two topics now, but I
figure this will be both more applicable and more useful to
others here, plus I found the source here.

Would it be possible to read from a text file, rather than
hooking in to iTunes? That way, people may use this plugin
together with something like
http://amip.tools-for.net/index.php?content=about and their
favourite music player, rather than just iTunes.

Also, could you create and submit a .patch for your oscar
changes?
