Hi. Well, there is no need to drive slowly. I usually head for the bridge running fast as I can under fire. I get on to it fine at maximum speed. Also as for hidden enemies always good idea to check if the coast is clear unless of course you are getting hammered by several enemies and then usually it is best to break for the bridge at maximum speed.
