Hi, M.J.
Your concerns are certainly valid, but unfortunately this is a classic
case of big corperation verses a single nobody. First off At&T and
companies like them are use to dealing with huge corperations, and they
are really worried about Sony, Microsoft, or anyone else with a big name
using their products illegally. If you are Joe Smo, and you use it here
and there it is doubtful they will notice, and if they do notice often
it isn't worth following up on as they can't get money from someone who
doesn't have much to begin with. Remember they are the ones who charge
insanely large prices for the rights to distribute there voices, and
often they put it well beyond what a blind developer can afford. So what
is the alternative?
Another classic case of this is my brief, but unhappy attempts to
contact Lucasfilm for the rights to make SWJS. As far as I was able to
get was Lucas doesn't deal licenses out to private individuals. They
only handle licenses to major corperations, and of course they are
talking serious money like millions of bucks as that is what they have
set their standards at. To add insult to injury they mainly have one
game company Lucas Arts which does 99% of the Star Wars games, and Lucas
Arts to my knolege does not seam any bit interested in making them
accessible at this time.
So what do I do? Well, I am blind, I am a developer, and I have the
skills to write Star Wars Games. My only problem is Lucas won't sell me
a license, and if they did it would be well beyond a private individuals
pay. So I have to do it, and hope I remain under the radar.
