Hi David,
That sounds like a logical layout for a full 3D environment. However, if 
you go 3D that completely adds a new relm of complexity to the game. If 
we are talking Star trek though 3D would probably be lost on the game 
since technically starships don't make sounds unless they are firing, 
going to warp, etc... Finding them could be a pain with no sound cues.
Although, since space is truly 3D that would make an interesting game 
and galaxies could be layered on top of each other as well as side by side.
