What about the code generator? I would assume that would still be piracy
since Justin made money off of it and didn't subsequently release it as
abandonware when he closed up shop.

No that isn't true. Redistributing the demo would not be piracy. Only
passing around unlock codes to unlock the demo would qualify as
piracy. The demo was and always has been shareware under copyright
law.
