Hey Kelly, I haven't played Swamp in a while, but think you might be encountering a bug that to the best of my knowledge hasn't been squashed yet, that being that zombie growls don't always update their position in realtime in keeping with where the zombie is. Seems like they're position right when the sound starts to play, but they don't get repositioned as the file plays out, and with some of the nasties, those growls are pretty long sound files, so you end up shooting at nothing. To get around this, I'd try and get into the habit of aiming for footsteps rather than growls. You can tell whether you're in any immediate danger by the speed of zombie footsteps btw, they amble along pretty slowly when they're idle, and their footsteps get faster when they're tracking something (probably you).
