Hi Lori.
There is no help file nor save function and I don't believe you can pause
the game, though awsome though the game is, it isn't intended as a long
game.
You can skip the intro after you have either finished the game or got a game
over, but not before then.
As to the houses, it is the D key you need to hit once your on the roof to
get an idea of the mood of the people inside, after that point Lyriel should
tell you how to give a gift of an emotion to make things better, then your
done with the tutorial and can begin the game propper.
