Hi nicol,
When most game developers start a game they usually write up a story of what
they expect in the game.
It does not have to be something others will read but it can help in coming
up with details that will make the story more believable.
I started the Sarah game based on the movie Labyrinth in which a young girl
wishes her baby brother would disappear and he does.
So her task is to find him and get him back.
She finds that he has been taken by a king in a magic castle and she has to
go through a maze to get to the castle.
Then I thought of doing a Harry Potter game and realized I could combine the
two stories if Sarah was the only one exploring the castle.
If I did a real Harry Potter game with all the hundreds of students in the
school, it would take years so I had the game take place during the summer
when there were no students.
I wanted the woman to be an American since I am one and it would fit since
if she was from the UK she would have already gone to Hogwarts and thus
would know all about it.
Then I picked out things that Harry did in the first five books that would
be interesting for a game player to do like mix a potion or try to take an
egg away from a dragon or find your way to a candy store.
And I researched what rooms and classes were on what floors of the castle
and that's how it started.
Phil
