Hi andy. Well firstly, when I started playing the game I had to spend a fair amount of time memorizing all the keys and learning how to use them, sinse Shades has a lot of highly useful keys when you've worked them out. this took a couple of readings of the manual and some experimentation.
there are certainly some handy keys that I use a lot such as V, for have I visited an area before, and shift V to set marker. You can also use the W key to check your coordinates. The x key can tell you about what room or corridor your in (you can even have this sort of thing said automatically if you set auto navigation on in the menues. I played with this on for a while, but now generally leave it off). For finding objects and things, the D (scan ahead), and shift D (360 scan), keystrokes were always something I found handy, especially when there are lots of objects and monsters around, but the O, control O, m and control M keystrokes can also be useful for quick info (especially I found for looking at the distance betwene myself and a monster). Oh and for the monsters, I will admit I do like to use the nightscope when I'm targiting with ranged weapons (though conserving it's batteries by keeping it off until it's needed is a good idea as well). Raul gillegos used to have a great audio walkthrough for Shades of doom on his site, but I'm not sure where it's gone now.
