1. Is it possible to explore maps without actually being attacked? I
want to know where and what is where, so I can plan to attack things.

Send some peasants to scout. They are in defensive mode by default so
they flee if they arrive into a square with enemies. Then use F5 to
listen to the number of units in this square. You can also send a
soldier in defensive mode.

2. Could the locations of the mines and woods and so on be changed randomly?

I created one random map (only resources locations were random) but I
removed it later. Before that I will give the ability to write maps. I
may include this random feature in the map language too.

3. if there was a keystroke to get to the next unknown square...

Yes. Maybe Alt + page up or page down. Anyway there are lots of
unknown squares or squares in the fog of war, so maybe an auto-explore
order would be interesting.
