Hi Josh,
Java uses it's own graphical classes and toolkit via Swing. So it is not 
connected with any specific desktop like Gnome or KDE. Gnome uses GTK 
and KDE uses QT, Windows uses Win32 API, and so on. One reason Java is 
platform independant is it doesn't restrict itself to platform specific 
toolkits, libraries, etc.
