Mine never did that. It just started screaming at you once the batteries got to a certain point. Or, if you turned it on without a module in it it would just start making these really weird noises instead of giving you a word to spell. I've also heard of them just all of a sudden picking a random letter of the alphabet and then saying a word that began with that letter any time you tried to set a spelling level. That was another sign that the batteries were about to die.
