Hi Claudio,
Yes. We were converting all of our games over to Java 6 during the
time of the last news letter, but about two weeks ago we ran into some
major technical difficulties with them. One of the biggest issue is
the games didn't operate correctly on all the systems we tested them
on. I might run it on a Standard Windows XP system running Java 6, and
it might run ok. The second I tried to run the same game under Linux
with the Sun Java runtime or OpenJDK runtime environment the game
would outright crash. Keyboard input might work ok on say Windows but
act very sluggish on Mac and Linux. The second I fixed the problem
with it running on Mac or Linux it then would begin acting weird under
Windows.
At one point I pretty much desided to just target Windows 2000, XP,
and Vista and forget about Mac and Linux. So that did solve the
problem with cross platform compatibility issues and it was becoming
quite stable for the Windows release, but another technical difficulty
soon popped up. What I found out the hard way is that Java is great
for small games, but when you begin adding hundreds of sounds and
speech files to it Java based games will take a massive proformence
hit. I suppose given enough time I should be able to figure out how to
manage game resources better so Java based games won't take such a big
proformence hit. However, I don't have a lot of time at the moment.
In the end the beta testers and i decided the best thing to do right
now is finish the games using C# using the original .NET source code I
have and leave a cross platform in Java, C++, Python, etc to maybe a
version 2.0 release or something.
Cheers.
