Hi Shane, That's what it is suppose to do. If she is six steps away from a fire pit she isn't going to jump it from six feet away. Use a little common sense. She has to run up to it before jumping it. Since people have a little problem understanding how it works here is a spoiler.
s p o i l e r s p a c e When entering a room with a trap hold down the shift+control+arrow key. Angela will run x number of steps, and soon as she is about one foot from the trap you will hear her automatically jump. Hold down the control+arrow key until she clears the trap. Once she lands you can do whatever. Hope that makes sense. Cheers!
