Allison, The short answer to your question is, 'sort of'. Most of the special events have a large solo component and some are entirely solo, but when I'm running something like the anniversary events with a big handmade 'end of the world' storyline, the only reasonable way I can handle it is to put people in big groups and run them en masse. I don't consider these social groups though, and you'd be hard pressed to socialize in them. Other events may have grouping in them by their very nature, such as death marches, but it's hardly mandatory to participate in these.
Regarding very high level areas, there are a few that are arguably only worth the effort if you're grouped up, but I've seen very few things on the game that can't be taken down solo with enough forethought, planning and levels. I'm personally a solo style player myself, so I make sure that solo play is possible and fun, just for my own sanity. I'm glad you're liking the game so far.
