Hi.
Well the page and description were updated in may, and I believe I fixed the
links then to the developer of winfrotz' own page, but that I don't think
is the problem as far as jaws goes.
I'm not sure if there are jaws scripts for winfrotz, but there is certainly
a sapi option in the actual winfrtoz program itself (don't confuse this with
winfrotz tts, that is a separate program that was made before! the winfrtoz
sapi support was added and is no longer maintained, so that it won't work on
post xp windows), and I've heard many jaws users say good things about
filfre, so you don't have to go down the dos route at all.
Beware the grue!
Dark.

Hi Dark.
OK, well thank you very much for your assistance, to be honest I'm
reluctant to go down the DOS route for a number of reasons, ease of use
being one of them especially for new users. I'm going to try and locate
some JFW scripts, I'm using Winfrotz 1.61 at the moment which I obtained
directly from the IF archive and to which your index page in the DB
points. Has that page been updated recently?
All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi ibrahim.
I wouldn't recommend using dos frotz myself, because running it will be a
pain for most people and even if not, there are more conventional and
full
featured windows interpreters as you said yourself.
I know some people prefer dos frotz which is fine, but it wouldn't
personally be my choice.
As I said, i'd either recommend getting jaws and winfrotz to cooperate,
using the sapi output in winfrotz, or trying the filfre interpreter
instead.
All the best,
Dark.

Hi Dark.
Thank you very much for your assistance, I had considered using the old
console mode version of Frotz which was specifically built for Windows 95
console mode, however it is as old as the hills and doesn't support
things like timed input, music etc. etc. I'm looking for a fully
featured interpreter as I'm not only planning to play these games myself
but also introduce these Infocom games to friends who until now have
never heard of them. I have to consider ease of setting up and use, if
people have to keep coming back to me then either they or I will lose
interest. When we talk about the latest DOS frotz interpreter, do we
mean the DJGPP version?
All the best, Ibrahim.

Good to know filfre works with some infocom titles, I just remember
hereing it wouldn't do arthur and other games in the old zip format
(not
to be confused with compression).
Beware the grue!

I have had success with the Filfre interpreter, available from the
interactive fiction archive, although the sounds in Lurking Horror and
Sherlock doesn't seem to work with Filfre. I've also been able to run the
latest version of Frotz for Dos in the command prompt under Windows XP.
Maybe it work sunder Windows 7 too.
I know there are Windows versions of Nfrotz and Fizmo, compiled under
the Cygwin framework. Those can be a little tricky to set up though, at
least if you don't have som e Linux/Unix experience.

Hi Everyone.
First of all, a big hello! to you all. My name is Ibrahim and I live
in the UK in a town called Peterborough. I am totally blind and an
avid gamer. I particularly enjoy action/adventure games on both my PC
and IPhone but am eager to try all sorts of new games as I am very open
minded. I am here both to make new friends and help others, so I will
be contributing as much as time and opportunity allows.
Right, on to my question then. I used to play Interactive Fiction AKA
text adventures years ago and want to do so once more. I’m
particularly desirous to play the classic Infocom titles and so am try
to find an accessible way to do this. I have tried Winfrotz as
referenced by the audio games.net website archive, however it doesn’t
appear to work well with JAWS 13, for though I’m able to read the
status line, JAWS wont read the textual description of the location and
objects etc..
Please could anyone tell me how i can resolve this, either by using a
different interpreter or via another method?
All the best, Ibrahim.

Hi Ibrihim and welcome.
Firstly, I'm glad you find the audiogames.net db usefull, it is always
good to here people have been reading and using the entries to
games.
As regards interactive fiction and winfrotz, well I believe there are
some jaws scripts but I'll leave that to people who actually use
jaws.
in winfrotz, you can also enable sapi support to ahve incoming text
read automatically by your sapi voice, go to options, and to the
speech page then check the box. the sapi support is still a little
clunky as there is no speech interupt or ability to reread what was
printed to the screen, though I have talked to the developer of
winfrotz and winglulx and he's stated he'll look at adding this in the
future.
I do find myself however that the sapi support, occasionally aided by
supernova's virtual curser works fine, indeed back when I started
playing interactive fiction with winfrotz I just! used the virtual
curser.
I have also heard that the filfre interpreter is particularly good
with jaws, once again, check the filfre page in th db for details.
As to the infocom games, you can find them all at
http://if.illuminion.de/index.html I have heard filfre has had trouble
opening some of the older infocom format games in zip or dat format,
so you might also want to considder that when thinking about
interpreters.
hth.
All the best,
Dark.
