I think that is a bug. I got past it by going to the menu and loading the
last save. In order to open that bulkhead you have to grab the green gem
then go to the east wing corridor and grab the six other gems. Take those to
the lion's head statue in the main corridor and you'll automatically use
them all. That enables you to return to the dark corridor and approach the
altar that Nicolas calls the First Altar. You'll use the key automatically
at that point. Then anytime you approach the altar you'll enter the secret
library itself.

Okay, now what the heck, is this a bug or what? Finally got to the Secret
Library and arrived at the Wall of Forbidden Knowledge or whatever. Now it
won't let me do anything at all here. I can only enter my inventory and
that's it. I could use the key to the secret library but with what? It
should at least let me go back to the previous area.
