I agree with Michele that we should fix our JSON and represent the true
types.
Note that "null" is not a proper maybe, but a dirty (albeit popular) hack,
that happens to work for "Maybe String", but will fail already for
something as simple as "Maybe (Maybe String)". So changing the haskell JSON
library is unfeasible---but for fundamental reasons.
