Committed revision 1536

all users of Linux biarch distributions are expected to set --libdir to
whatever is needed at configure time as there is no longer any attempt to
guess what would be the right directory to use as suggested by Marcus.

package distributions are encouraged to use snapshots older thatn this one
in all their supported platforms to ensure they all build correctly.
