If you look at my site (guppi.georgetown.edu) you'll find that I'm doing something similar. I just got it running, with help from Steven Wagner. I'm running clusters and stand-alone machines on a grid of computers.
You only need one gmetad. Put each separate reporting gmond on a different subnet and point them all to the one gmetad on the webserver. Just make sure you add the machine with the gmetad to your "trusted_hosts" line of gmond.conf. Works great.
