I assume you're compiling with a 64-bit compiler .. this is required.  It
runs fine on my Ultra 10s after I went to gcc 3.2.2 built as
sparcv9-sun-solaris2.9.  What does 'file gmond' tell you?  What does the
debugging output tell you if you run it manually with '-d 99'?
