Try to comment out the disk part in the /etc/gmond.conf. gmond doesn't
likes SGI (or xfs ?) disks. Works for me ...

However, I have no disk monitoring on the Altix. Besides, the 3.0.1 gmond
is also crashing consistently on a HP rx1620 server (IA64) running RH EL3
AS U4 also. This server does not have any SGI/xfs. 2.5.7 runs, as I said
earlier, just fine, identical config, converted by gmond to v3 format.
