It is true that some people will need to customize, but in general, it seems to me that running with RRDs in RAM fits a lot more situations than on disk. Rather than defaulting to disk and leaving it to people to figure out that they might want to reconfigure to use RAM, it would be better to have a default installation use RAM, with documentation explaining how to change the configuration not to do so.
