It's not really necessary, but doesn't hurt and does provide an extra
measure of safety.  Its main nice feature is that it prevents us from
losing up to ten minutes of data (or whatever the cron interval is)
if we do a quick move or reconfig or reboot - it ensures that the data
we save on disk really is the most recent that gmetad collected.
