When one gets the gmond XML front bit but not the rest occurs when you don't explicitly configure a udp_send_channel to the host itself. So to get "nc my-host 8649" to spurt a,ll your data, configure gmond.conf to have a udp send channel to "my-host". 127.0.0.1 won't do.
