chkconfig uses a comment in the init script that tells it which
runlevels to
enable/disable and at which levels and from what I recall, the
gmetad/gmond
init scripts which are part of the package had those comments already
and so
all that should be needed is to tell chkconfig to use them (for example)

  # chkconfig --add gmond

This doesn't seem to work you're referring to the gmond.init script
right? I'm using Ganglia from sources.
