If you are going with the route where you are manually adding the hostnames in /etc/hosts file, then make sure you do that for all your gmond hosts, or at least the ones which is referenced in gmetad.conf. After you have made the changes, make sure you shut down your entire Ganglia installation (i.e. all gmonds and gmetad) and then start up gmond first, then gmetad. Your hosts should (hopefully) show up with hostnames as opposed to ip addresses.
