I am having the same problem in Solaris with ganglia 3.1.2 (one cluster with one single node polled by a single gmetad using the default configuration)
gmond seems to be running, it keeps collecting data and sending messages to the console if running in debug mode but the TCP port 8649 stops responding, therefore gmetad can't collect more data and Ganglia Web shows the servers as down. I get the same problem faster if I increase the frequency that gmetad connects to the gmond agent, I think the problem may occur after a fixed number of poll cycles by gmetad.
