Well, it's kinda a hack but it works, I'm using monit to restart the
non responding gmond node... Here's the relevant part of /etc/monitrc:
check host localhost with address localhost
if failed host localhost port 8649
expect "^<\?xml.*"
then exec "/etc/init.d/gmond restart"
