There should not be any problems with rrdtool 1.3. You may see some minor differences in fonts moving from 1.2 to 1.3 or 1.4, but this should be a cosmetic change, as opposed to functional. IIRC, 1.3.x added various madvise() improvements to avoid needless readahead calls. I suspect these are included in 1.4.x as well.
