We had the same problem with gmond 3.0.4 on Solaris 10 / x86. As far as we were able to debug, it's a bug in Solaris itself, and particularly with the interaction between IGMPv3 support in the kernel and switches that only do IGMPv2. The only workarounds we were able to use were unicast, or restarting gmond quite often on the machines we had gmetad talking to.
Sorry I can't say we figured it out; we moved the networks we had trouble with to Linux for other reasons, and don't have the problem there. We think that's because Linux uses IGMPv2 directly without negotiating down from IGMPv3. I'll note that we use Solaris 10 / x86 with multicast just fine in other networks; it was specifically the interaction with the specific v2-only switches that seemed to be the problem. If the multicast stayed within a single switch, it took days to occur; if it was across multiple switches in the same broadcast domain, it would happen in an hour or less. We had pretty good evidence it was Solaris & the switch interacting: (a) it doesn't happen with other switches, (b) it doesn't happen with Linux, (c) it *does* happen with the same switches, Solaris, and other multicast-based applications. We did some packet captures, but I've forgotten the results. We got the switch vendor involved as well, but were never able to get resolution beyond the v2 vs. v3 idea. -- ReC On Nov 16, 2009, at 5:28 PM, River Tarnell wrote: > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- > Hash: SHA1 > > Jorge Medina: >> Does anyone has experienced the same problem? > > yes - we are seeing this problem (Solaris 10 x86), and i understand > several other people on the list also have. since we only have > Solaris > servers, this makes Ganglia quite useless for us. > >> Any suggestions, solutions? > > someone (i don't remember who, sorry) suggested setting > "send_metadata_interval = 60" (or any non-zero value) in gmond.conf. > this did not fix the problem for us. > > - river. > -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- > Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (HP-UX) > > iEYEARECAAYFAksB/C8ACgkQIXd7fCuc5vJQpwCgml3x2+Aq6FfPCYdzVyE9A2nK > qbcAoKH5K5TBVsWNDcxfYXot7iXbJKFV > =cIMb > -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ > Let Crystal Reports handle the reporting - Free Crystal Reports 2008 > 30-Day > trial.
