The most reliable mechanism I've found to prevent this is:

1. Make sure the gmetad host has /etc/hosts entries for each node's
   IP, mapping that IP to the hostname you want it to report as.

And,

2. Make symlinks in the parent directory of the rrd data tree,
   pointing every alternate hostname or IP that sometimes turns up to
   the canonical name you want to use.
