Generally speaking, if you're on a RPM-based system, I would install
software using RPMs if they are available.

RPM packages do not know how to upgrade software installed via source,
so you'll need to manually un-install rrdtool 1.4.3 and then install
another version via RPM.

All the dependencies for building Ganglia on EL5 should be available
via EPEL or RPMforge.
