My first suggestion, based on bitter experience, is that you start another mailing list for license related discussion. This is, unfortunately, an issue with no clear winner. We chose Modified BSD which basically says "you touch it, you own it. we aren't responsible for your choices" :-) Modified BSD seems compliant with virtually every other license. Because Axiom is an all literate common lisp program we handle attribution by using the latex \author tag. If there are more than 5 authors or the original author is unknown we attribute the code to "The Axiom Team". Note that the Linux project has recently (due to the SCO circus) added a method of tracking authors and copyrights. You might want to copy their idea and implementation.
