I'm on Slackware-current, and i didn't need it at all for GNOME 2.16 (default stuff went relativity cleanly, at least i never had to uncomment any lines to make the hal compile like what i needed to do in 2.14), i would assume this applies to GNOME 2.17 too, but haven't tested it
