There has been an interest among members regarding the production of methanol.
This useful liquid is a convenient way with which to store energy, especially
if it can be used for powering transportation. The raw materials are reasonably
easy to acquire. CO+hydrogen= Methane. or natural gas. which is available to
the fortunate.
Hitherto, the methods of converting methane to methanol have been expensive
involving high pressures and catalysts for large scale production performed by
big oil.
There are some simpler processes in the works which require scrutiny. For
instance, there is a photo synthesis type of process which produces hydroxyl
radicals
under the exposure of light radiant energy, producing nano bubbles of hydrogen
which combine with the methane in a water bath. the mechanical requirements to
perform this task do not sound very complicated, porous ceramic tubes, a pump,
UV lamps. heat exchanger. pressure cooker. condenser. not much more than a
small moon shine set up, Oh did I mention Titanium dioxide? This substance is
widely used by paint manufacturers, they add it to skimmed milk and probably
sliced bread (white). If you think of a UV sterilizing lamp or perhaps corona
discharge, both of which can produce O3 or even O4 then think what you can do
with
just Methane, and water?
