Dear List,
A pure gas inside the cylinder or inside a hose pipe would not burn
unless it is mixed with oxygen. One can hold a candle in front of the
nozzle of a cylinder full of combustible gas like LPG or CNG and then
open the valve. The gas would burn only when it comes out of the
cylinder. Migration of the flame into the transmission hose is
possible only if somehow oxygen enters the hose.

Actually, while acetylene doesn't burn without oxygen, it can decompose (usually due to pressure) and generate significant heat and pressure. Often this is called an explosion (it isn't, exactly, but the results are spectacular.)
