My father in law did some of the early work on pure acetylene detonation at Los Alamos in the 1950s. He tells the story of taking the "shocking" results to Eisenhower's science advisor to warn of the dangers. Advice that was dismissed until an industrial plant blew up.

He was in to nuclear gasification. Lets make a harbor in Alaska.

As for premixed producer gas. Does any one have a top speed for an optimum producer gas flame? Then can't you just calculate or trial the pipe diameter leading to the burner that keeps the premix moving faster than that speed.

Top speed for hydrogen in air is around 12 ft/sec. Can you live with that?

Dear List,
A pure gas inside the cylinder or inside a hose pipe would not burn
unless it is mixed with oxygen. One can hold a candle in front of the
nozzle of a cylinder full of combustible gas like LPG or CNG and then
open the valve. The gas would burn only when it comes out of the
cylinder. Migration of the flame into the transmission hose is
possible only if somehow oxygen enters the hose.

Actually, while acetylene doesn't burn without oxygen, it can decompose
(usually due to pressure) and generate significant heat and pressure.
Often this is called an explosion (it isn't, exactly, but the results
are spectacular.)
