Dear Lori OK! For small scale field trials, the "Gilmore Charcoal System" seems very appropriate.
I would suggest for your consideration that you get a good soil analysis, and then conduct pot trials, using radish (fast growing) to see what biochar addition rates and what other additives (fertilizer, lime, microbes, organic additions, etc) give the best results, and whether larger scale field tests are warranted. Please keep us posted on how you proceed, and what results you get.
