Hi Jeff. As far as 2 engines goes, as long as the gasifier is able to supply the needed volume, there should be no problem, a check valve (light flap door) on each engine would probably be a good idea, as one engine running would suck air from the intake of the other, until it was also running.
The more pistons sucking the smoother the "pumping" action in the gasifier (a V12 would be smoother than a V6) Under draw (one engine running) and over draw (both engines driven to full load) would be the only issues I would see....
