The US Department of Energy Update to the "Billion Ton" study is released today. This is the USDOE's estimate of the amount of biomass that would be available for conversion to renewable energy without displacing projected use of resources for food, feed and fiber.

The plenary discussion delved into the report's impact, usefulness, implications, and overall findings. The 2016 Billion-Ton Report, jointly released by the U.S. Department of Energy and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), concludes that the United States has the potential to sustainably produce at least 1 billion dry tons of nonfood biomass resources annually by 2040. New in the 2016 report are assessments of potential biomass supplies from algae, from new energy crops (miscanthus, energy cane, eucalyptus), and from municipal solid waste. Increasing production and use of biofuel, biopower, and bioproducts would substantially decrease greenhouse gas emissions in the utility and transportation sectors and reduce U.S. dependence on imported oil as the domestic bioeconomy grows. Volume 2 of the report is set for release later this year. On July 21, BETO will host a joint webinar with ORNL to discuss volume 1 of the report, including the results, scenarios, and reasoning behind assumptions and constraints. More details to come following Bioenergy 2016.
