we have some good experience with operating electric filters with wood gas.
Measures have to be taken to prevent the soot from reaching the insulaters,
since the soot works as a conductor.
There is at least one WESP design from Paul Forsthuber, Austria, which is used
in several fixed bed downdraft gasifier systems in the 200-300 kWe range. I
worked with such WESP in one project earlier. It works fine, but it needs some
attention from time to time as well.
Others, like Beth Filters, Lubeck, Germany, which use quite standard WESP
design, are not what I think to be the ideal design.
Tom, would you supply your electric filters for third hand projects? Could you
provide some more detailed information?

Well, if you don't have the right insulator system, that is true, but with the
right insulating design, it doesn't happen. We have hundreds to thousands of
hours operating time with perfectly intact insulating system at 35-50 kv in the
acidic, conductive and potentially explosive environment, with the fact that a
produced gas is not supposed to contain oxygen so it won't ignite, this is
built into the control system as a back up.
Of course, everyone thinks that the hanging wire "indirect charging" ESP is the
design when it fact it it not and the charging density can be 50-200x greater
in the design we use, which makes it much smaller for the same collecting
effect.
Keep pursuing the same obsolete designs and then don't cry about not have an
economic system.

Sorry for slow response but have been a bit ill these last ten days.
The bad news is that ESP isn't going to work either with wet carbon
soot. It shorts out all the anodes causing arcing and explosions. The
European guys had several "incidents" so not sure they are even legal to
use, other than for dry boiler fly ash, etc. I'm sure Bjorn has more to
add, but save your $$ and time.
