Compressibility factor is simply an adjustment to the Ideal Gas law which gives a relationship between volume, temperature and pressure for a given gas or mixture of gases. "Z" as it is known is generally 1.000 for "non-associating" gases up to 2-3 atmospheres of pressure (~45 psig). "Non-associating" here means relatively non-polar, which producer gas probably is. I ran a typical producer gas composition through my simulation software which computes Z rigorously from viral coefficients. Z computed as 0.9995 at 1.0 psig and 800°F (our typical reactor outlet conditions). Thus for all practical purposes, you'll probably be good enough for compressor equipment sizing assuming Z = 1.000 for producer gas up to around 300° F and 400 psig.

But having said all of this, Ken is still right. I also have yet to compute an economic solution to producer gas compression under any "real-world" circumstance. Although, there are some folks out there working on producer gas FT. These new catalyst formulations are apparently not affected by the presence of the N2. And the World continues..........

Subject: [Gasification] Compressibility Factor

Hey

Does anyone know or can they work out a compressibility factor ( Z factor)
for a typical producer gas from a down draft biomass system?

Mark
