Dear Derek
I gather the hopper lid is sealed on a down draft gasifier to keep oxygen
under control. Is this correct?
# Yes.
If I am using a dense fuel, as in small
spaces between bits, will this be an issue?
# Maybe. You need a tall bed so that air flow down through the feed is
insignificant.
# If you have a "stratified Downdraft" configuration, with all teh air
coming in through the feed, then you can use an open top, but if you have an
Imbert style, then you need either a closed top, OR a tall fuel bed. With an
Imbert, the Reaction Zone is "anchored" to the tuyere region, while with a
Stratified Downdraft, the reaction zone can progress up the fuel bed. Excess
liberation of pyrolysis gases can lead to tarry final gas product. If you
are producing a Fuel Grade Gas (FGG) then this is not a problem, but if
producing an Engine Grade Gas (EGG), this could be a serious problem.
I would like to top feed the
hopper for continual operation. Recognizing the limitations of small
sized
fuel, my thought was that there would be enough resistance to airflow. If
need be I can put an auger into the hopper and otherwise keep the top
closed
(although, even in this configuration some oxygen would get in).
# Unless you have a rather tall fuel bed, with a fuel having a relatively
high pressure drop, to ensure minimal downflow of "hopper air", if you have
an Imbert Design, then you will need a sealed top, and a screw feed.
# Best wishes,
Kevin
Thanks for any responses.
