It's possible to dry wood with steam.

I have a colleague who built a commercial steam dryer in a 20' shipping
container.  It was being used to dry firewood.

I would imagine that if you blast any wood fuel with superheated
nitrogen/steam mix from an engine exhaust at 400-700C then the net effect
will be to first drive off the water vapour and then begin to torrefy the
fuel.

I'll try to get some more details.
