Unfortunately, I'm not in an HR position, otherwise, a bunch of y'all would be welcome where I work - provided, of course, that you meet all the requirements to become certified Texas teachers (and that's quite another story). I have been in education for 30 years and my field is a bit recession-proof. To a point. Luckily, I enjoy the school and staff where I work as I have been here for the past 12 full years - in #13 now - (the previous 17 were in the Houston area). If I were to decide just to teach physical education and not coach, I would have to resign my position (my contract reads a position of Teacher/Coach) and hope there would be an elementary position open. In Round Rock ISD, as in most Texas school districts, phys. ed. and coaching go hand in hand at the middle school and high school levels. In most public schools, one must be a staff member in order to coach an interscholastic sport. I'm at the top of the pay scale due to my years of experience (I'm not a dept. head or the athletics coordinator for the school) - so it would be very easy and cost-conscious for the district to hire someone with less experience. Even the "Good ole boy" network would possibly work against me. Therefore, I hope to not get burnt out and put my experience to use. Even a master's degree in the field could work against me at this point in my career. The big question for me is how many more years to teach & coach? Funny thing (read: strange thing) is this - I still haven't a clue as to what I'd like to do - or could do - if I had (or chose) to quit the education business. There's not much help in that area - especially in today's job markets and levels of skills needed for working in the "real world". Just rambling on & enjoying all the interesting reading.
