<<Does it list how many downs he played?>><<<If he is as good as all the experts say he is - then why is he not getting all the downs he wants? Look at Janoris Jenkins - he came in and stole a starter's job. I think 39 tackels and 3 interceptions. >>>
Janoris came into a defenisive backfield that was depleted, so he had a greater chance to start. Second, Patchan was injured during the off-season (gun shot wound) so wasn't in as good a position as he could have been to compete for playing time. Third, he was playing the D-line last year where we had great starters but needed quality depth and he just didn't have SEC size or strength for a full season of starting on DL, not to mention the fact he was recruited for the OL.
<<but if the guys that see him everyday deem him to be worthy to start I'll give them the benefit of the doubt>><<<I agree - but it is easy to see why everyone is so high on Spikes - he leads the defense in tackles - so high on Dunlap - I think he leads in sacks, so high on Haden, Wright, and Black - they lead the secondary in interceptions and in tackles. These guys have the numbers and stats to back them up.But you look up Patchan and he is like #24 with no numbers and stats to back up all the great things said about him. >>>
Spikes was a Junior, Patchan a freshman, hard to compare. Also hard to compare secondary positions with DL. It would be typical for the S and LBs to get more tackles. I think Patchan will be a great one. He is that rare OL that has a mean streak and likes to fight for his position. He will be a beast and will contribute greatly this year.-------- Original Message --------

Does it list how many downs he played? I'd bet it's a far sight fewer than Spikes. ;)
The coaches are the ones that seem to like him - he was generally regarded as too light to make much of an impact anywhere last year, but apparently he was a beast in practice. I think it's a testament to his ability how far he has progressed despite the injuries that were holding him back.
I still think that if James Wilson was producing Matt would enter the season as a backup, but if the guys that see him everyday deem him to be worthy to start I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, at least until it's proven otherwise.

Nothing against Matt Patchan - but I don't understand why everyone is so in love with this guy and everything he wants to do. Granted the guy has potental - i think he was a 5 starer coming out of HS. But if you look at what he has done - I don't understand it.He had only 7 tackles last year (Spikes had 93 for comparison) - he is tied at #24 on the defense.page 6The guy is always hurt.I don't understand the love affair with Patchan. I don't understand how he has proved himself?
