The NCAA Has Banned Eyeblack Messages and Wedge Blocks. It's Also Implemented Strong Taunting PenaltiesOn Thursday, the NCAA approved rule changes for the 2010 NCAA College Football season. The NCAA will now ban eyeblack with messages on it as well as wedge blocks on kickoffs.NCAA Bans Eyeblack MessagesThe NCAA has banned eyeblack with messages on it. The eyeblack message rose to popularity thanks to former USC Reggie Bush and Florida QB Tim Tebow.Tebow, in particular, made a point of using eyeblack messages. Throughout his days at Florida, Tebow wrote the names of Bible passages on his eyeblack. Some examples: Tebow wrote Phil 4:13, Heb: 12 1-2 and John 16:33 on his eyeblack during his last two season with the Gators.Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor stirred up controversy when he wrote an eyeblack message in support of controversial NFL quarterback Michael Vick.
NCAA Wedge Block Ban
The NFL banned wedge blocks a year ago and the NCAA is now following suit. While the eyeblack ban was a cosmetic change, the wedge block is seen as a safety measure. The new rule states that the team receiving a kickoff can no longer have more than two players standing within two yards of one another, shoulder to shoulder. If so, the team will be given a 15-yard penalty, even if there is no contact on the play.
The NCAA banned the wedge block out of concern for the number of concussions that occur during kickoff returns.
